Engineers Without Borders Denmark is a Danish technical-humanitarian NGO that puts engineering expertise directly to work. Often in places where it is difficult to reach, where others cannot go, and always where it can make a real difference.
We are volunteer engineers who use our professional skills in humanitarian efforts and support – today, especially in Ukraine.
What we do in Ukraine
As the war in Ukraine continues and civilian infrastructure remains under attack, we intensified our efforts to support reconstruction.
A stable physical presence is central to our approach. Our volunteers travel to the affected areas and work directly with local partners and communities. This builds trust, enables problems to be addressed more quickly and ensures that solutions are based on a current understanding of local conditions.
For us, being present is not merely symbolic, it is also essential to our operations. Continued engagement on the ground remains necessary to ensure effective collaboration, high technical quality and the timely completion of projects.
At the request of Vitalii Kim, Governor of the Mykolaiv region, we have expanded our activities to include smaller and more remote communities, including areas previously occupied by Russian forces.
In close collaboration with Ukrainian partners and international organisations, we support reconstruction and help restore essential services and facilities in communities affected by the war.
Our approach combines short-term technical assistance with a long-term perspective on reconstruction. communities.
Where are we active?
We are – or can be – active in most parts of Ukraine where there is a need for technical-humanitarian support and collaboration.
Thanks to the longstanding partnership between the Mykolaiv region and Denmark, our engineers have been working extensively in this area, especially in smaller frontline communities and in and around Mykolaiv. More recently, we have also established local partnerships in Kharkiv.
Engineers Without Borders Denmark also collaborates with the Danish Embassy in Ukraine, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and multiple Danish and international humanitarian organisations.

Construction

We support local partners with structural assessments, technical inspections and the planning of renovation work. This expertise is urgently needed because of the large number of damaged buildings across the region.
For us, it is essential that reconstruction is both technically sound and economically realistic.
In collaboration with corporate partners, we have also introduced advanced technical tools to support this work. During assessments at the National University of Shipbuilding in Mykolaiv, EWB volunteers used 3D scanning technology donated by Rambøll to document structural conditions in complex older buildings and support the planning of renovation work.
These assessments help ensure that reconstruction is based on reliable data and practical engineering solutions adapted to local conditions.

Reliable access to clean water remains one of the most urgent infrastructure challenges in many communities across the Mykolaiv region.
Damage to water supply systems, ageing infrastructure and disrupted maintenance have made it difficult for towns and villages to maintain a stable water supply. Frequent power cuts make the situation even worse.
Through our projects, we provide practical engineering expertise that helps communities restore essential water supplies and identify sustainable technical solutions for long-term operation.

Heating infrastructure has become one of the most critical challenges in Ukraine. Centralised systems are frequently targeted by Russian missiles and drones, while a stable heat supply is essential for schools, hospitals and public institutions to continue operating through the long and harsh winters.
EWB volunteers support local partners by assessing heating needs, calculating energy requirements, identifying opportunities for energy optimisation and recommending improvements that increase efficiency and reliability.
One key example was the rapid preparation of technical specifications for mobile heating units requested by the Danish Red Cross and the Ukrainian Red Cross. In less than two weeks, a team was assembled and deployed, showing how engineering expertise can create an immediate humanitarian impact.
Heating systems are a new technical field for EWB, but one in which engineering expertise can make a direct humanitarian difference by helping schools, shelters and community facilities remain operational throughout the winter.

Reliable energy systems are another essential part of community resilience.
Across several projects, EWB volunteers have provided technical advice on electrical systems, energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energy solutions. In addition to supporting installation work, they advise partners on system configuration and long-term operation to ensure reliable and stable performance.
Across Ukraine, our volunteers are increasingly helping local partners assess opportunities to improve energy efficiency in damaged or ageing buildings. Even relatively small improvements can significantly reduce operating costs and improve the performance of critical infrastructure.
