Biogas and Safe Waste Management at Apida Community Hospital

In Homa Bay, Kenya, organic and infectious hospital waste poses a serious health and environmental challenge. Today, waste such as kitchen leftovers and biological material from childbirth accumulates, increasing the risk of diseases like cholera and diarrhoea among both patients and the local population.

The project will establish a modern biogas facility that converts hospital waste into clean, renewable energy. The biogas produced can be used directly at the hospital for cooking, sterilisation, and operating equipment, while also reducing waste volumes, pollution, and methane emissions.

The initiative combines improved hygiene, green energy, and training for hospital staff and the local community. This creates a circular and sustainable waste management solution that strengthens both public health and the environment in Apida.
