Meet Shukri

“Small changes like access to clean water and disability-friendly facilities help children stay in school.”

Making these changes is what drives the work of Shukri Hussein, Programme Manager at 100% for the Children Kenya. In her role, she oversees projects supporting children and youth in Nairobi’s informal settlements.

Through initiatives such as safe sanitation facilities, inclusive learning environments, reusable menstrual products, and sexual/reproductive health education, more children are able to stay in school.

“I’m motivated by the idea that every child should have a fair chance to learn, grow, and be safe, no matter their background or circumstances. What drives me is seeing change happen, not just in individual lives, but in the systems and structures around them so that schools, communities, and services are genuinely set up for all children to thrive.”

One moment she is particularly proud of was seeing a school transform its sanitation facilities and the impact it had:

“Knowing that the school has seen increased enrollment as a result of these upgrades shows that parents trust the school and that children feel confident and safe to learn there.”

Despite the challenges of limited resources and complex community realities, she remains committed to the work:

“These challenges also push us to work creatively and collaboratively with the communities, and think outside the box to find solutions that can make a difference.”

At Engineers Without Borders, we are grateful to work with Shukri and 1100% for the Children to create safer and more inclusive environments for children to learn and thrive. 💚
